Cook County is located at the southern tip of Lake Michigan in northeast Illinois. The County encompasses the City of Chicago and surrounding suburban areas. Roughly 5.2 million residents, 14 Fortune 500 companies (six of which are located outside of Chicago), the nation’s second busiest airport and the nation’s largest railroad hub all call Cook County home.
County government performs three principal functions: the protection of persons and property, the provision of public health services and general government services including, the assessment of property, levy, collection and distribution of taxes and maintenance of 1,500 miles of roadway and 130 bridges.
