PROJECT OVERVIEW
DoTH is proposing reconstruction on Buffalo Grove Road between Hintz Road and Weiland Road. This 2.1-mile corridor is located in the Villages of Arlington Heights, Buffalo Grove and Wheeling as well as Wheeling Township. This is a vital roadway serving over 15,000 vehicles daily traveling to schools, parks, recreation centers and businesses.

Buffalo Grove Road is a 5-lane roadway with two 12-foot lanes in each direction and a 16-foot center mountable median lane. The median lane is also used as a left-turn lane at various locations throughout the project limits. Sidewalks are present along both sides of the roadway through most of the corridor.

The purpose of this project is to reconstruct the existing pavement and replace/modernize the aging infrastructure on Buffalo Grove Road that is nearing the end of its service life. The project aims to enhance safety and connectivity for all users along Buffalo Grove Road. Specific improvements include:
- Full reconstruction of the roadway pavement
- Re-striping the roadway to include narrower travel lanes and a wider median
- Drainage improvements throughout the project limits
- Improved traffic signals at Hintz Road, the Ranch Mart/Grove Court shopping center entrance and Bernard Drive
- Add new sidewalk to fill an existing gap on the west side of Buffalo Grove Road between Flentie Lane and Cambridge Plaza West
- Add a new mid-block crossing with a refuge island north of Burr Oak Drive
- Add a new shared-use path connection between Hintz Road and the trail at Centennial Park
- Add a new shared-use path connection between Dundee Road and Bernard Drive
- Add raised, landscaped medians to improve aesthetics at select locations
- The Village of Buffalo Grove will implement water and sanitary sewer system improvements in conjunction with this project to streamline construction efforts and minimize disruptions for residents and commuters

- Improved pavement and traffic signals
- Reduced lane widths will promote traffic calming
- Sidewalk/shared-use path replacements and extensions will improve pedestrian and bicycle accessibility and connectivity
- Mid-block pedestrian crossing with refuge island north of Burr Oak Drive will improve access to parks, trails and public transportation
- Drainage improvements will reduce future flooding risk, improve water quality and protect adjacent properties
- Maintain and modernize what already exists
- Promote equal access to opportunities
- Prioritize transit and other transportation alternatives
The preliminary engineering phase of this project is nearing completion and DoTH is seeking community feedback. During this phase, the project team developed several design alternatives and conducted environmental and engineering studies to determine the preferred alternative.
Both agency and community input will be considered throughout this phase. After the final design of the preferred alternative, the next phase of the project begins with preparation of construction documents.
