Human Rights Day is an international day of observance held on December 10 to commemorate the adoption of the Universal Declaration of Human Rights (UDHR). This year’s theme is “Human Rights, Our Everyday Essentials,” recognizes that “A Roof Over Your Head, A Human Right.” By commemorating this day with an event that highlights the importance of fair housing, the Commission on Human Rights will center housing as fundamental to ensuring dignity and safety for everyone. It is a right we all play a role in making a reality.
In anticipation of the event, Commission on Human Rights Executive Director Jennifer King said, “We hear time and time again that job attainment and security, access to education, and availability of public transit, grocery stores, and green spaces – fundamental human rights – are directly related to housing access. As such, the human right to clean, safe, livable housing and the right to access that housing without discrimination or harassment is more vital than ever.”
The event will include a panel discussion and a resource fair featuring several government housing agencies and non-profit organizations. Attendees will gain an understanding of Cook County’s fair housing laws and key protections, best practices for compliance, and how housing providers, community partners, and government agencies work together to create more welcoming neighborhoods. Panelists include
- John Petruszak, Executive Director at South Suburban Housing Center,
- Samantha Dewberry, Community Engagement Manager at Housing Choice Partners, and
- Andre Gordillo, Director of Family Support Network at Illinois Coalition for Immigrant and Refugee Rights.
