Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle Encourages Override of Governor’s SB 1 Veto

Gov. Bruce Rauner has made clear that he thinks it’s a winning political message to divide Chicago Public Schools students, like my three grandchildren, from other Illinois students. And he’s shown that he is willing to hold every public school student in this state hostage on the political bet that voters will be more motivated by animus toward “others”—in this case, young Chicago residents—than by the promise of providing a quality public school education to all Illinoisans. As a grandmother, I find this offensive. As an educator who dedicated much of my life to teaching, I find this insulting. And as an elected official, I find his decision to let destructive politics get in the way of good policy morally reprehensible.

I urge House Republicans to do the right thing for Illinois children and join Democrats to override the governor's veto of SB1.
