Cook County Issues Disaster Proclamation for July 27 Storm Event
Thousands of residents impacted by severe weather including a series of tornadoes
Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle issued a disaster proclamation today for Cook County in response to storms that hit the region on July 27, 2026. The County experienced severe thunderstorms, torrential rainfall, localized flash flooding, downed trees and power lines, structural damage, transportation disruptions and extensive utility outages across numerous municipalities. The National Weather Service confirmed EF-1 tornadoes in Country Club Hills, Glenwood and Lynwood, which impacted portions of Harvey, Markham, Homewood and Lansing. EF-0 tornadoes also touched down in Orland Park and Hazel Crest.
By signing this proclamation, the County can pursue available resources to assist communities and residents in their recovery efforts.
“Earlier this week, severe storms brought significant damage and disruption to communities across Cook County,” said President Preckwinkle. “I am grateful for the collaboration of our municipal partners, the State of Illinois, first responders, utility providers and Cook County Emergency Management and Regional Security as we continue responding to the needs of impacted communities and businesses. My administration will continue standing with residents, supporting local recovery efforts and pursuing all available resources to help communities rebuild.”
The Cook County Department of Emergency Management and Regional Security (EMRS) monitored the needs of communities during the storm and continues to assist with recovery efforts. EMRS is coordinating with local leadership, emergency management offices, first responders and public works to assess damage for a comprehensive response. Since the storm, EMRS has worked with over 15 municipalities on wide-ranging efforts including fulfilling equipment requests for generators, excavators and portable light towers in addition to debris removal and road clearance in partnership with Cook County Department of Transportation and Highways. Collaboration continues with ComEd, American Red Cross and Salvation Army.
Cook County and EMRS are encouraging impacted residents to fill out the Cook County Resident Damage Survey online to report damages from this storm system by August 5. EMRS is working alongside state partners to collect and analyze all data to help determine what assistance and resources may be available to impacted residents.
