Bring your family, friends and neighbors. South Suburbs, Illinois (March 4, 2013) – The time is now if you are looking to volunteer to help a local non-profit whose mission is to provide an opportunity for low/middle income families to own their own home. “In 2013, Habitat for Humanity Chicago South Suburbs will celebrate 25 years serving the south suburbs,” noted executive director David Tracy, and in just the past year we completed our 66th home and also helped another 23 families with weatherization upgrades and other home related services. Our program is designed to provide an opportunity for home ownership to hard working families who otherwise would live in sub-standard condition. Habitat houses are sold to partner families at no profit and financed with zero percent interest, affordable loans. Habitat for Humanity is not a giveaway program. In addition to monthly mortgage payments, homeowners invest hundreds of hours of their own labor (sweat equity) into building their Habitat house and the homes of others.” Volunteers are needed at all levels of the operation — to work at jobsites, on committees or at the Habitat ReStore. “At the jobsite we can use anyone age 16+ — skill is not a prerequisite as our crew is quite adept at training,” added Tracy. In fact, that’s the reason a lot of people volunteer — to learn how to paint, or cut wood or install drywall.” “But we also need volunteers who might have some experience with public relations, fundraising or human resources. Right now we’re looking for volunteers to work on four committees: Family Selection/ Support, Fundraising, Public Relations and Faith Relations.” The affiliate will host a special volunteer engagement event on Saturday, March 23rd at the Bloom Township Center – 425 S. Halsted in Chicago Heights. The event will run from 11am to 1pm and will answer all of the frequently asked questions related to volunteering at the construction site, the ReStore or on one of the four committees. “With busy lives, it can be hard to find time to volunteer. However, the benefits of volunteering are enormous to you, your family, and your community”. “America was built on the spirit of volunteerism and so was our community. Now is an exciting time to continue that building with Habitat as we continue to build more than houses.” Tracy added.
