President Preckwinkle Announces Suburban Cook County Wraparound Services for Survivors of Gun Violence Funding Opportunity

$5 million in funding is available for Suburban Community-Based Organizations

Today, President Preckwinkle and the Cook County Justice Advisory Council (JAC) announced a funding opportunity designed to support residents who have been impacted by gun violence in Suburban Cook County. Up to $5 million in funding will be available to eligible community-based organizations through the Suburban Cook County Wraparound Services for Survivors of Gun Violence (SCC-SGV) grant opportunity.

“While we have made significant progress toward our goal of reducing gun violence, we have a long way to go in building the safe and thriving communities all residents deserve,” said Cook County Board President Toni Preckwinkle. “This grant initiative represents our commitment to continuing to invest in the programs and services that are making a difference. Ensuring survivors and those closest to ongoing violence can access services will support their healing and contribute to safer, stronger communities for all.”

The SCC-SGV grant opportunity builds on $5 million of prior investment under the Cook County Wraparound Services for Survivors of Gun Violence Grant initiative which primarily supported organizations serving residents in the City of Chicago. This round of funding is focused on Cook County's Suburban communities; it is designed to be responsive to the needs and circumstances of communities in Suburban Cook County that experience the highest rates of gun violence.

“Cook County’s community safety investment strategy focuses on where grant funding is needed most and supporting programming that is both evidence-informed and community affirmed,” said Avik Das, Executive Director of the JAC. “In preparing for SCC-SGV, we conducted an unprecedented level of community engagement, hosting listening sessions across South and West Suburban communities. We heard about the unique challenges survivors and community organizations face and we are proud to be launching a grant opportunity that is comprehensive and responsive to the needs of the community.”

SCC-SGV will fund services for survivors and those directly impacted by gun violence including clinical services, financial assistance, trauma-informed programming and housing services. The initiative is designed to address gaps in services by focusing on three priorities: expanding existing services, increasing access and improving coordination of services. The grant opportunity is open to community-based non-profit organizations that provide select services and operate in Suburban Cook County.
